Sol Calero’s work is informed by aspects of culture and ancestry, particularly relating to her own history. Her pieces are animated, playful and vibrant, though their appearance initially belies their political and critical content.
Visual and stylistic tropes of fruit and salsa dresses are deployed to question, subvert and problematise how Latin America, specifically her native country Venezuela, is portrayed, promoted and mediated by others.

The three pastel drawings are rendered in the artist’s signature palette of blues, reds, greens and yellows. While they appear instinctive, light and playful, the drawings carry with them the misuse and misconceptions of cultural codes and the troubled nature tied to aesthetics associated with exoticism.
