Drws Y Coed

Cloudscape
5 November - 4 January 2015
Following an international call out to artists and makers, the beautiful art-nouveau windows of the shop at MOSTYN gallery in Llandudno’s Vaughan Street will soon be home to an exciting Christmas display by locally based Hannah Wardle of North Wales lighting company ‘Drws y Coed’. Hannah worked as an architectural lighting designer for 6 years and, in 2012, started her business ‘Drws y Coed’,which focuses on the micro-manufacturing opportunities provided by digital technologies. Hannah has created a Winter Cloudscape, using plywood and local Welsh timber to form a series of highly patterned laser cut screens, combined with warm glowing lighting and lamps. Inspired by her childhood in the Vale of Clwyd, the landscape and the light of the woodland inform her designs. Selected following an open submission, Hannah said: The MOSTYN window commission is a wonderful opportunity for me to take my work to a bigger scale. I'm really delighted to design something to fit this space. There is a great collection of Welsh and UK makers in the MOSTYN shop and it’s great to have a chance to build a setting to show them off. Each year MOSTYN invites proposals for design of the Christmas display, and previous winners have gone on the secure commissions at Liberty, London, Manchester City Gallery and the Craft Council. MOSTYN’s Retail Manager, Barry Morris, said: Hannah’s bold graphic design and inventive use of lighting really stood out during the selection process. I’m sure her window will become a must-see in Llandudno this festive season. The window commission allows us the opportunity to provide a platform for designers and makers to showcase their work on a larger scale, and to contribute to their development. It’s wonderful that we can support Hannah in this way.
